OTTAWA, October 8, 2010 – Canada’s Archery Team captured the silver medal in the Women’s Compound Bow Team event at the Delhi Commonwealth Games. The Canadians shot brilliantly to finish just 3 points behind England in the gold medal match. The Canadian Team is comprised of Camille Bouffard-Demers of Bécancour, QC, Doris Jones of Selkirk, MB and Ashley Wallace of Redcliff, AB.

The Commonwealth Games silver caps off a strong season for Canada’s women competing in the Compound Bow category, particularly Ashley Wallace. Wallace has stood on the podium five times this season at World Cup events, including last month’s World Cup final in Edinburgh, Scotland where she captured silver in the individual event.  This same Compound Bow team also captured silver at the World Cup held in Ogden, Utah this past August.

In the lead-up to the final the Canadian women shot with incredible accuracy where their qualifying score for the team round was just 3 points off the world record. In the final, this amazing accuracy continued for Canada and also for England where every arrow shot by both teams hit the gold-coloured centre of the target.

Canadian Coach Joan McDonald said: “This is a young team that gave an excellent performance today. They kept their cool and focus throughout. They have enormous talent and will be a force to be reckoned with in the future.”

In today’s competition, Canada’s Women’s Recurve Bow Team goes up against England in a semi-final match to determine who competes for gold or bronze. In individual competition, Kateri Vrakking and Jason Lyon compete in the ¼ finals of the Women’s and Men’s Recurve Bow respectively.

OTTAWA, October 12, 2010 – Canada’s Archery Team again reached the podium at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.  Archery competition over the weekend saw Canada increase its medal total from one to four, when it captured another team medal and added two individual medals.

The Women’s Recurve Bow Team, comprised of Marie-Pier Beaudet of Lévis, QC, Alana MacDougall of Scarborough, ON, and Kateri Vrakking of Etobicoke, ON, beat the Malaysian team by 10 points to handily win the bronze medal match.

In individual action, Jason (Jay) Lyon of Winnipeg, MB brought home the silver in the Men’s Recurve Bow category.  A 2008 Olympian, Lyon found himself in a see-saw battle for the gold against his opponent from the host nation India.  Lyon capped off the 2010 season with strong performances throughout the medal rounds.

On the women’s individual side, Doris Jones of Selkirk, MB just missed finishing atop the podium, when she struck silver in the Compound Bow category. The gold medal match pitted Jones against her rival from England that she had faced earlier in the Games in the team gold medal competition. In the team competition, Jones and her Compound Bow team-mates of Camille Bouffard-Demers of Bécancour, QC and Ashley Wallace of Redcliff, AB, finished just 3 points behind England in the gold medal match.

“These Games have been a tremendous success for our Team and for Canadian archery” said Canadian Head Coach Joan McDonald. “The success here certainly provides a solid foundation for our program and a boost in confidence for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.”  Team Leader Richard Towler added: “We are very proud of all our archers. This Team really pulled together.”

2.       2010 Pan-American Archery Championship

A large Canadian contingent competed at the 2010 Pan-American Archery Championships held in late October in Guadalajara, Mexico.  Several of the athletes and staff had also represented Canada at the Commonwealth Games earlier in the month.

CONGRATULATIONS to ALL ATHLETES! In particular, CONGRATULATIONS to the MEDAL WINNERS: Philippe ARSENAULT, Crispin DUENAS and Hugh MacDONALD. And THANK YOU to the staff, particularly Team Leader Richard Towler!

Below are excerpts from the media releases prepared by Archery Canada.

OTTAWA, October 19, 2010 – Canada’s Male Recurve Bow Team struck silver at the 2010 Pan-American Archery Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico.  The Canadian Team comprised of Crispin Duenas of Toronto, ON, Hugh MacDonald of Vancouver, BC and Philippe Arsenault of Edmonton, AB, narrowly lost to Team USA in the gold medal match.  In individual competition, Arsenault stood on the podium a second time yesterday after defeating his opponent from Cuba to win gold in the Men’s Junior Recurve Bow category.

In Women’s action, the Canadian Recurve Bow Team just missed the podium, finishing 4th.  The Women’s Team, comprised of Marie-Pier Beaudet of Lévis, QC, Alana MacDougall of Scarborough, ON, and Kateri Vrakking of Etobicoke, ON, captured the bronze medal at the recent Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.

The silver medal won by the Men’s Team combined with the Women’s 4th place finish at these Championships, qualifies Canada to send a full team of 3 men and 3 women in the Recurve Bow category at the 2011 Pan-American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

“To qualify a full team of 3 archers in both the Men’s and Women’s Recurve Bow category for the 2011 Pan-American Games is a tremendous accomplishment”, said Team Leader Richard Towler.  He added: “We are definitely building on our success from the Commonwealth Games.”

“Phil Arsenault has been at the top of his game at these Championships” said Towler. “Winning two medals at the Pan-Am Championships is huge for me and a real boost to my confidence”, said Arsenault.

The 2010 Pan-American Archery Championships are serving as a test event for the 2011 Pan-American Games. The Championships are being held at the ‘Revolucion Sports Complex’ in Guadalajara, Mexico, the archery venue for the 2011 Games.  The 2011 Pan-American Games run October 14 to 30 in Guadalajara, just nine months prior to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The remainder of the Canadian Recurve Bow and Compound Bow archers now turn their attention to the qualifying and elimination rounds in individual competition. The Pan-American Archery Championships has attracted top calibre archers from the Americas including Canada, Mexico, USA, Brazil and Argentina.  The Pan-American Archery Championships finish this Friday, October 22nd.

OTTAWA, October 22, 2010 – Canada’s Crispin Duenas captured the bronze medal in the Men’s Recurve Bow category yesterday at the 2010 Pan-American Archery Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico.  Duenas shot against Juan Rene Serrano of Mexico in the bronze medal match, one of the top archers in the World.  Serrano placed 4th at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Duenas took control of the match early and never let go defeating Serrano 7 - 1.

“Crispin shot a tremendous match”, said his personal coach Joan McDonald. “Serrano is one of the best in the World and Crispin proved he belongs with the top archers.”

Duenas’ bronze medal capped-off a successful week so far for the Canadian Team. Earlier in the week, the Men’s Recurve Bow Team comprised of Duenas of Toronto, ON, Hugh MacDonald of Vancouver, BC and Philippe Arsenault of Edmonton, AB, narrowly lost to Team USA in the gold medal match.  In the Men’s Junior Recurve Bow category, Arsenault won the gold.

The Pan-American Archery Championships finish Friday, October 22nd.  The Championships served as a test event for the 2011 Pan-American Games. The Championships are being held at the ‘Revolucion Sports Complex’ in Guadalajara, Mexico, the archery venue for the 2011 Games.

5.       Update: Archery Canada’s Coordinator of Anti-Doping Education & Doping Control

As the competitive season is winding down it seems to be a good time to get back in touch with the athletes and coaches involved in this great sport.  I would like to congratulate all of the athletes who have represented our country at this season’s international competitions and those who compete nationally.  We have had a great year with many medals and terrific results.  As we move into the fall and winter it is a good time to remind all current competitors and up-and-coming archers of all ages, and coaches and parents of the commitment made by Archery Canada, FITA and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) in the fight for clean sport and the resources available to ensure athletes compete safely and fairly.

As noted above, you will see that the 2011 WADA Prohibited List: Summary of Revisions is now available at the CCES website.  It is important to know what is on the list before you begin taking any medications.  The CCES has made available an on-line resource, the Global DRO, which allows you or your physician to look up any medication you may be taking, or consider taking and ensure it is safe and not on the prohibited list.  This includes both prescription and over-the-counter medications.  We have included this reference and many others on the Archery Canada webpage and you will also find this resource and many other invaluable tools on the CCES site under the “Athlete’s Zone”.  Check these out as it will help you remain fully informed about a number of issues related to the anti-doping program.

I would also like to remind everyone that the use of alcohol and the use of pseudoephedrine (found in many cold medications) are prohibited during competition.  Also, marijuana is tested for and athletes must be aware that evidence of use remains in the blood stream for a significant period of time.  The other area of concern arises from the use of dietary supplements.  Many of these supplements produce metabolites in the blood stream that mimic the use of prohibited substances and you may test positive if you are selected for testing.  CCES cannot give you a list of supplements that are safe or unsafe because the industry is not regulated and there is no quality control with regards to labelling with full ingredient lists or with regard to consistency in the content of multiple batches of the same supplement.  It is a “user beware” scenario and you must be very careful about using any supplements.

Have a great fall and winter! I hope to meet many of you in the new year.

Nancy Littke

Coordinator, Anti-Doping Education & Doping Control
