1.         Marjory Saunders, 1972 Olympian Passes Away

Archery Canada is sad to announce the passing of 1972 Olympic Archery Team member Marjory (Marj) Saunders on Friday, November 26th. Marj passed away at her home in Maple Ridge, BC sitting in her favourite chair. She is fondly remembered by the archery community in BC and Canada. Marj was the oldest member of the 1972 Canadian Olympic Team and went on to compete on other Canadian National Teams. A true icon of Canadian Archery has passed.

4.         2011 Mail Match Program

We are just one month away from the start of this exciting annual competition!

Archery Canada Tir à l’Arc’s Mail Match Program is a competition held every year from the first of January to the end of March. Competitors may shoot a maximum of 1 round (FITA 1 – 30 arrows at 18 metres) per week for 12 weeks. These scores are sent to the Mail Match Coordinator who sends out monthly updates of scores and averages. At the end of the 12 weeks the six best scores for each archer are averaged and medals awarded in each division and classification. Pins are also awarded for six for sixty (paid for by the competitor at a cost of $5.25 + S/H per pin).

There is also a Team Event where you are able to compete as a team against other clubs. A team shall consist of 3 or 4 members from the same club. Team composition shall consist of: at least one (1) finger shooter, at least one (1) release shooter and at least one (1) woman, junior or younger age or wheelchair archer. Clubs can only submit ONE (1) team.

The Mail Match is an excellent competition for the archer who cannot get to any of the larger tournaments during the winter months. It also gives you an idea as to how other archers are shooting by comparison. This competition is also good practice for tournaments but under less stressful conditions.

If you wish to participate in the Mail Match Program, contact your club president or secretary. If they don’t have the information, contact Patti Middlebrough, Archery Canada Mail Match Coordinator at (780) 997-6411 or by email at: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. 7.         Canadian Athletes Now Fund: CAN Fund Application Due January 7th 2011

ABOUT CANADIAN ATHLETES NOW FUND

CAN Fund is a not-for-profit organization devoted solely to raising funds and awareness for elite Canadian athletes.  CAN Fund has raised over $11 million and directly supported hundreds of Canadian athletes from coast to coast.  With every donation the donor finds out the name of the athlete they have supported and receives a tax receipt.  Direct funding is provided to both able-bodied and Paralympic athletes and summer and winter athletes are eligible to apply for funding twice a year.  Approved athletes receive $6,000 per application and up to $12,000 a year from the CAN Fund.  Athletes use this direct funding for coaching, equipment, better nutrition, travel, team fees and basic living expenses.  National team athletes who are actively training to represent Canada at the international level are eligible to apply for funding.

APPLYING TO THE CANADIAN ATHLETES NOW FUND

When is the next CAN Fund athlete application deadline? The deadline for the next athlete application is Friday, January, 7, 2011 (5pm EST) and CAN Fund is accepting applications NOW!  In fact, the first application for the new deadline has already arrived!

How do I submit my application? All applications must be mailed to the CAN Fund office, CAN Fund does NOT accept applications via email or fax.  CAN Fund's mailing address is:

Canadian Athletes Now Fund

106 Berkeley Street

Toronto, ON

M5A 2W7

Where can I get the CAN Fund Application?  Attached are English and French versions of the application and both versions are also available on the CAN Fund website http://www.canadianathletesnow.ca/about-us/applications-for-funding.html

If I applied to the CAN Fund in April 2010 do I need to re-apply to be considered for funding for the January 2011 deadline?  YES!  Each application is a NEW application.  Applications do not carry over from the previous deadline so to be considered for the next funding cycle you must submit a new application by the deadline (Friday, January, 7, 2011 - 5pm EST).

If I received funding from the last application can I apply for the new deadline?  Yes, CAN Fund offers two applications per year and athletes are eligible to apply each time.  If approved, athletes receive $6,000 per application and up to $12,000 per year.  Applications are open to both summer and winter athletes; able bodied and paralympic who are training to represent Canada at the international level.

Tip: When asking for reference letters for your application ask for a few copies so that you have them on file for future use.  You can use the same reference letters from previous applications but you must re-submit a hardcopy of these reference letters each time you apply.

Important: Do not wait until the last minute to submit your application.  CAN Fund has allotted sufficient time to get your applications in well before the deadline.  80% of the applications are received in the final week leading up to the deadline as athletes scramble to get their applications completed and in on time.  Although the deadline is 9 weeks away, start working on your applications now!  Funds are not distributed until all applications received prior to the deadline have been processed and reviewed, however, CAN Fund does start processing applications as they are received.  Which means, if the majority of the applications are received in the final few days before the deadline it takes longer to process and longer to start distributing funds once the deadline has passed.

NOTE:  If you are attending an NCAA school on a scholarship, please look at all your options when applying to the Canadian Athletes Now Fund.  It is imperative that you determine your school's stipulations in accepting outside (the school) funding.  Be advised that each educational institution has its regulations and policies and it is YOUR responsibility to determine if the Canadian Athletes Now Fund meets their approval.

If you have any questions about the CAN Fund application you can contact Meagan, CAN Fund Athlete Relations Manager  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it  or 416-487-4442 or 1-866-937-2008

9.         FITA Media Release: Message from Tom Dielen, FITA Secretary General

The International Archery Federation (FITA) Council met in Istanbul on 13-14 November 2010. Among key decisions, the 2015 World Archery Championships were awarded to Copenhagen (DEN) and the compound archers will shoot 15-arrow matches on 10-5 scoring rings target face with cumulative scores.

The Council also took the decisions to attribute the World Archery Indoor Championships 2012 to Las Vegas (USA) and the World Archery Youth Championships 2013 to Wuxi (CHN), near Shanghai and Nanjing, pending definitive signing of the Organising Contracts.

The Council short listed Paris, Tokyo and Lausanne as candidates for the upcoming World Cup Finals. The decision on 2012 and 13 will be taken in January 2011.

As planned, the Council reviewed the new competition formats of 2010 and made some adjustments. The key decisions on competition formats are listed below.

The compound archers will shoot:

- Qualifications round at 50 metres with cumulative scor! es on a 10-5 scoring rings target face.

- All individual elimination matches at 50 metres with 5 ends of 3 arrows and cumulative scores on the same target face as the one used in the qualifications. The maximum score is 150 points and the archer having obtained the highest total score will win the match.

The recurve archers will shoot:

- All individual elimination matches with 5 sets of 3 arrows—using the 2010 Set Format for scores. The archer obtaining 6 set points wins the match.

- To note, the qualification rounds for recurve do not change.

Teams:

- A team will consist of the highest three ranked archers in the qualification round, unless the team captain notify in writing his three chosen archers to the Director of Shooting or the Chairman of Judges one hour prior to the start of the eliminations. Only three medals per team will be awarded. This rule only will come into effect on 1 April 2011 and does not apply for world championships where there are only three archers.

- To note, team matches do not change (24 arrows, cumulative score), except for shoot-off (see below).

Shoot-off:

- The teams will only play shoot-off of one arrow per member. In case of a tied shoot-off score (after the three arrows per team), the team with the closest arrow to the centre will win. If the best arrow per team is at the same distance to the centre, the judges will look at the second best, and subsequently the third arrow. This rule comes into effect on 1st January.

- In matches with alternate shooting, the teams will play the shoot-off with teams shooting alternatively per archer (Team A shoots with archer 1, followed by team B shooting with archer 1. Then team A shoots with archer 2, followed by team B shooting with archer 2, etc.) This rule comes into effect on 1 January 2011.

- To note, as of 2010, the individual shoot-off are also shot with one arrow only, closest to centre.

The financial situation of FITA was also reviewed for 2010 and the following years. It is healthy. For other decisions please refer to the Council Meeting minutes that will be published in due course.

Tom Dielen

FITA Secretary General

11.       CCES Advisory Note

Supplements containing methylhexaneamine or DMAA can lead to a doping violation

(Ottawa, Ontario – November 15, 2010) – The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) advises athletes and support personnel that supplements containing the banned stimulant methylhexaneamine are widely available in the Canadian market and have been the source of many doping violations worldwide over the last year.

12.       Update: Archery Canada’s Coordinator of Anti-Doping Education & Doping Control

As the competitive season is winding down it seems to be a good time to get back in touch with the athletes and coaches involved in this great sport.  I would like to congratulate all of the athletes who have represented our country at this season’s international competitions and those who compete nationally.  We have had a great year with many medals and terrific results.  As we move into the fall and winter it is a good time to remind all current competitors and up-and-coming archers of all ages, and coaches and parents of the commitment made by Archery Canada, FITA and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) in the fight for clean sport and the resources available to ensure athletes compete safely and fairly.

As noted above, you will see that the 2011 WADA Prohibited List: Summary of Revisions is now available at the CCES website.  It is important to know what is on the list before you begin taking any medications.  The CCES has made available an on-line resource, the Global DRO, which allows you or your physician to look up any medication you may be taking, or consider taking and ensure it is safe and not on the prohibited list.  This includes both prescription and over-the-counter medications.  We have included this reference and many others on the Archery Canada webpage and you will also find this resource and many other invaluable tools on the CCES site under the “Athlete’s Zone”.  Check these out as it will help you remain fully informed about a number of issues related to the anti-doping program.

I would also like to remind everyone that the use of alcohol and the use of pseudoephedrine (found in many cold medications) are prohibited during competition.  Also, marijuana is tested for and athletes must be aware that evidence of use remains in the blood stream for a significant period of time.  The other area of concern arises from the use of dietary supplements.  Many of these supplements produce metabolites in the blood stream that mimic the use of prohibited substances and you may test positive if you are selected for testing.  CCES cannot give you a list of supplements that are safe or unsafe because the industry is not regulated and there is no quality control with regards to labelling with full ingredient lists or with regard to consistency in the content of multiple batches of the same supplement.  It is a “user beware” scenario and you must be very careful about using any supplements.

Have a great fall and winter! I hope to meet many of you in the new year.

Nancy Littke

Coordinator, Anti-Doping Education & Doping Control
