4. 2011 Mail Match Program

We are just one month away from the start of this exciting annual competition!

Archery Canada Tir à l’Arc’s Mail Match Program is a competition held every year from the first of January to the end of March. Competitors may shoot a maximum of 1 round (FITA 1 – 30 arrows at 18 metres) per week for 12 weeks. These scores are sent to the Mail Match Coordinator who sends out monthly updates of scores and averages. At the end of the 12 weeks the six best scores for each archer are averaged and medals awarded in each division and classification. Pins are also awarded for six for sixty (paid for by the competitor at a cost of $5.25 + S/H per pin).

There is also a Team Event where you are able to compete as a team against other clubs. A team shall consist of 3 or 4 members from the same club. Team composition shall consist of: at least one (1) finger shooter, at least one (1) release shooter and at least one (1) woman, junior or younger age or wheelchair archer. Clubs can only submit ONE (1) team.

The Mail Match is an excellent competition for the archer who cannot get to any of the larger tournaments during the winter months. It also gives you an idea as to how other archers are shooting by comparison. This competition is also good practice for tournaments but under less stressful conditions.

If you wish to participate in the Mail Match Program, contact your club president or secretary. If they don’t have the information, contact Patti Middlebrough, Archery Canada Mail Match Coordinator at (780) 997-6411 or by email at: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. 6.         Canadian Athletes Now Fund: CAN Fund Application Due January 7th 2011

ABOUT CANADIAN ATHLETES NOW FUND

CAN Fund is a not-for-profit organization devoted solely to raising funds and awareness for elite Canadian athletes.  CAN Fund has raised over $11 million and directly supported hundreds of Canadian athletes from coast to coast.  With every donation the donor finds out the name of the athlete they have supported and receives a tax receipt.  Direct funding is provided to both able-bodied and Paralympic athletes and summer and winter athletes are eligible to apply for funding twice a year.  Approved athletes receive $6,000 per application and up to $12,000 a year from the CAN Fund.  Athletes use this direct funding for coaching, equipment, better nutrition, travel, team fees and basic living expenses.  National team athletes who are actively training to represent Canada at the international level are eligible to apply for funding.

APPLYING TO THE CANADIAN ATHLETES NOW FUND

When is the next CAN Fund athlete application deadline? The deadline for the next athlete application is Friday, January, 7, 2011 (5pm EST) and CAN Fund is accepting applications NOW!  In fact, the first application for the new deadline has already arrived!

How do I submit my application? All applications must be mailed to the CAN Fund office, CAN Fund does NOT accept applications via email or fax.  CAN Fund's mailing address is:

Canadian Athletes Now Fund

106 Berkeley Street

Toronto, ON

M5A 2W7

Where can I get the CAN Fund Application? Attached are English and French versions of the application and both versions are also available on the CAN Fund website http://www.canadianathletesnow.ca/about-us/applications-for-funding.html

If I applied to the CAN Fund in April 2010 do I need to re-apply to be considered for funding for the January 2011 deadline? YES!  Each application is a NEW application.  Applications do not carry over from the previous deadline so to be considered for the next funding cycle you must submit a new application by the deadline (Friday, January, 7, 2011 - 5pm EST).

If I received funding from the last application can I apply for the new deadline? Yes, CAN Fund offers two applications per year and athletes are eligible to apply each time.  If approved, athletes receive $6,000 per application and up to $12,000 per year.  Applications are open to both summer and winter athletes; able bodied and paralympic who are training to represent Canada at the international level.

Tip: When asking for reference letters for your application ask for a few copies so that you have them on file for future use.  You can use the same reference letters from previous applications but you must re-submit a hardcopy of these reference letters each time you apply.

Important: Do not wait until the last minute to submit your application.  CAN Fund has allotted sufficient time to get your applications in well before the deadline.  80% of the applications are received in the final week leading up to the deadline as athletes scramble to get their applications completed and in on time.  Although the deadline is 9 weeks away, start working on your applications now!  Funds are not distributed until all applications received prior to the deadline have been processed and reviewed, however, CAN Fund does start processing applications as they are received.  Which means, if the majority of the applications are received in the final few days before the deadline it takes longer to process and longer to start distributing funds once the deadline has passed.

NOTE: If you are attending an NCAA school on a scholarship, please look at all your options when applying to the Canadian Athletes Now Fund.  It is imperative that you determine your school's stipulations in accepting outside (the school) funding.  Be advised that each educational institution has its regulations and policies and it is YOUR responsibility to determine if the Canadian Athletes Now Fund meets their approval.

If you have any questions about the CAN Fund application you can contact Meagan, CAN Fund Athlete Relations Manager  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 416-487-4442 or 1-866-937-2008

11.       Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES): 2009-10 Annual Report

The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) has released its Annual Report 2009-10.

The past year has been a busy and exciting one for the CCES. We ushered in the latest version of the Canadian Anti Doping Program, explored the ethical dimensions of a number of contemporary issues and we saw the True Sport Movement membership edge ever closer to the 2,012 by 2012 target. Most importantly, and very proudly, we were at the heart of ensuring that the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympics Games were the cleanest Games in recent history.

The report is available as an online magazine at www.cces.ca/home or you can order a hard copy from This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

We encourage you to read our Annual Report to learn more about the exciting initiatives that we worked on this year. As always, we welcome any comments or questions you may have.
