2.    2011 Parapan American Games: Results

A small, strong team of three archers represented Canada at the recent Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Kevin Evans (Jaffray, BC) and Bob Hudson (Leoville, SK) each defeated strong opponents from the USA to advance to and face-off against one another in the gold match in the Men’s Open Compound category. Evans stood atop the podium while Hudson brought home the silver medal.  Rounding out the Canadian Team was Lyne Tremblay (Magog, QC), a 2008 Paralympian.  Although she finished out of the medals, Tremblay had a strong performance and in the process secured a quota spot for Canada in the Women’s Recurve Bow ARW2 category at the 2012 Paralympic Games.

In capturing the gold, Evans secured an additional quota spot for Canada in the Men’s

Open Compound category, at the 2012 Paralympic Games. Evans is a two-time World

Champion, having struck gold in the Men’s Open Compound Bow category at the 2007

and 2009 Para-Archery World Championships. In addition to his World Champion titles,

Evans is the holder of two World records in his category.

Hudson’s silver medal performance capped off a successful 2011 season, following a

season-ending injury in 2010.  At the Stoke Open held this September in Stoke

Mandeville, England, Hudson had a season’s best score and placement (4th place) and

thereby secured a 2012 Paralympic Games quota spot for Canada in the Men’s Open

Compound category.

“I’m really pleased and excited about winning the gold”, said Evans. “It’s been a bit of a rough season with some untimely injuries but things are definitely looking up. Standing on the podium along with Bob was a great feeling. Canada’s results here are a real confidence booster leading into next year’s Paralympics.”

Listed below are the athletes and staff that comprised the 2011 Parapan American Games Archery Team:

  • Kevin EVANS (Jaffray, BC) – Compound Bow, Men’s Open category
  • Bob HUDSON (Leoville, SK) - Compound Bow, Men’s Open category
  • Lyne TREMBLAY (Magog, QC) - Recurve Bow, Women’s ARW2 category.
  • Vladimir KOPECKY (Kimberley, BC) - Team Leader

5.       Mail Match 2012

The Mail Match is a competition held every year from the first of January to the end of March.  Competitors may shoot a maximum of 1 round (FITA 1 – 30 arrows at 18 meters) per week for 12 weeks (13 weeks during the 2012 year).  These scores are sent to the Mail Match Coordinator who sends out monthly updates of scores and averages.

At the end of the 13 weeks the six best scores for each archer are averaged and medals awarded in two ways, first under the Archery Canada category divisions (Gold, Silver and Bronze) and secondly by the listed classifications (only Gold is awarded to the top score in each).  Pins are also awarded for six for sixty (paid for by the competitor at a cost of $5.25 + S/H per pin).

Another way of taking part is by entering the Team Event where you are able to compete as a team against other clubs.  A team shall consist of 3 or 4 members from the same club.  Team composition shall consist of: at least one (1) finger shooter, at least one (1) release shooter and at least one (1) woman, junior or younger age or wheelchair archer. Clubs can only submit ONE (1) team.

The Mail Match is an excellent competition for the archer who cannot get to any of the larger tournaments during the winter months. It also gives you an idea as to how other archers are shooting by comparison.  This competition is also good practice for tournaments but under less stressful conditions.

If you wish to join the Mail Match, contact your club president or secretary.  If they don’t have the information, contact Patti Middlebrough at: Tel: 780-997-6411; Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

12.      Interim Chairperson for High Performance Committee

In early November, Archery Canada’s V-P of High Performance, Ed Wilson, stepped-down due to personal reasons. The V-P of High Performance also serves as the Chairperson of the High Performance Committee (HPC).

At the completion of the recent HPC meeting, Para-Athlete Representative Alec Denys volunteered to serve as the interim Chairperson of the HPC. In his words, Alec will “sheppard” the activities of the HPC. Alec is the current Para-Athlete Representative on the HP and will continue in this capacity.

Alec will not be serving in the capacity of V-P of High Performance. For the time being this position will remain vacant.  The V-P of High Performance position is up for nomination and election at the 2012 AGM in Victoria this August.

Alec is a former Paralympian in recurve archery. Alec came out of retirement in 2010 and now ‘shoots’ with the compound bow in the Men’s Open Compound category. In a very short period of time, Alec has proven to be a great addition to the HPC. He brings a breadth of expertise and experience to the HPC. Alec also sits on the CPC’s Athletes Council and on the Board of AthletesCAN.

Welcome aboard and thank you Alec!

Lastly, our sincere thanks and appreciation to Ed Wilson for the strong leadership he provided!

World Archery recently announced that it has outsourced its anti-doping administration to SportAccord as of January 1st 2012. 14.      2015 Pan/Parapan American Games: Elite Athletes Tapped to Consult on Games

Continuing with the momentum from the Guadalajara 2011 Pan/Parapan American Games, the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games Organizing Committee (TO2015) recently announced the appointment of 10 Canadian high-performance athletes to its newly created Athlete Advisory Council.

The Athlete Advisory Council has nationwide representation from Olympic, Paralympic, Pan Am and Parapan Am athletes: Carla Qualtrough, chair (para-swimming); Nathaniel Miller (water polo); Marie Dannhaeuser (para-swimming); Trevino Betty (athletics); Warren Sawkiw (baseball); Nicole Forrester (athletics); Erika Schmutz (wheelchair rugby); Alexandra Orlando (rhythmic gymnastics), Jane Thornton (rowing) and John Hastings (kayak).

“TO2015 has taken a major step forward in the creation of this Council,” said Sylvie Bernier, TO2015 Board Member and Olympic gold medallist. “Other international Games have had such advisory councils before, but this is the first one in Canada that reports into the Organizing Committee, so their input will be both vital and impactful.”

The Athlete Advisory Council will support and represent the views and interests of world-class athletes to help ensure best performances at the Toronto 2015 Games. The Council will also help shape programs to enhance the athlete experience, encourage community engagement and create an intimate and authentic Games experience.

More than 40 applicants were considered by an evaluation panel including representatives from the Canadian Olympic Committee Athlete Commission, Canadian Sport Centre, Canadian Paralympic Committee, AthletesCAN and TO2015. The goal of the selection panel was to create a Council of active and retired national team members that reflect the diversity of the Canadian sport system. Therefore, the eight selections announced today represent team sport, individual sport, male, female, French, English, Aboriginal and athletes with disabilities.

“We have been working extremely hard to define our objectives and goals for the next two years to be as effective as possible to the organization. By focusing on a few key areas, we feel we can make a large impact on TO2015,” said Carla Qualtrough, Chair, Athlete Advisory Council. “Promoting the Parapan side of the Games is important and will be a cornerstone of the work we want to achieve. If we can raise awareness of our para-athletes and their incredible stories of challenge and overcoming obstacles, then we’ve been successful.”

“The Council also wants to ensure the Athletes’ Village serves as a home away from home for the athletes,” said Alexandra Orlando, Marketing and Revenue Associate,TO2015, Olympian and 12-time Pan American medallist, who is serving as the TO2015 staff representative on the council. “By taking into account high-performance athletes’ invaluable knowledge and Games experience, the council can provide input to help create the right environment for Toronto 2015 athletes to perform at their best.”

The Athlete Advisory Council term of office is two years.
