The Archery Canada national office will be CLOSED from Monday, August 22nd through Monday, September 5th. The office will re-open Tuesday, September 6th .

2.       2011 Summer Universiade

 

Canadian archers competed this week at the 26th Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, China.

Team Leader and coach Vickilynne Schleppe of Calgary led a team of six archers – two females and four males. On the men’s side, Simon Rousseau of La Prairie, Que., and Nathan Cameron of Sherwood Park, Alta., competed in individual compound bow, while Brendan Sheridan of Calgary and Michael Wong of Edmonton competed in individual recurve.  On the women’s side, Vanessa Lee of Toronto and Caitlyn Schleppe of Calgary competed in individual recurve.

About the Summer Universiade

The Summer Universiade is an international multi-sport event that takes place every two years and is second only to the Olympic Games in the number of participating athletes and countries. The Universiade is open to competitors who are at least 17 and less than 28 years of age as of January 1 in the year of the Games. Participants must be full-time students at a post-secondary institution (university, college, CEGEP) or have graduated from a post-secondary institution in the year preceding the event.

3.       2011 World Youth Archery Championship

2011 World Champion, Chris Perkins (Athens, ON) will lead a strong team of 18 young Canadian archers to the 2011 World Youth Archery Championship in Legnica, Poland, August 22-28. Perkins won gold in the Men’s Individual Compound Bow category at the recent World Senior Championship in Torino, Italy.  At 19 and still a junior age athlete, Perkins was competing in his first-ever Senior World Championship. Perkins captured the Senior Canadian Champion title at the 2011 Canadian Target Championship held last week in Delisle, SK.

Perkins also recently set a World Indoor Record in a senior age event and captured the gold at the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax last February. Mike Kupchanko, (Regina, SK) and Keenan Brown (Winnipeg, MB) will round out the 3-member Compound Bow team. All 3 athletes competed at the 2009 World Youth Championships and are looking forward to their return to compete at Worlds.

Jeff Gunter, the Canadian Team Leader/Head Coach stated: “I am very excited about the possibilities of this Junior Male Compound team. The three archers who make up this team are skilled and seasoned competitors and will no doubt bring their ‘A game’ to Legnica. This will be fun."

In the Junior male Recurve Bow category, Canada will have a full 3-member team which will be led by Timon Park (Toronto, ON). Park competed for Canada at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games held in August 2010 in Singapore. This is Park’s 2nd World Youth Championships.  Park will be joined by Hamilton Nguyen (Toronto, ON) and Andrew Beriault (Toronto, ON). The 2011 Championships marks the first-time that Nguyen and Beriault will compete at the World Youth Championships.

Canada will also field a full 3-member team in the Junior female Recurve Bow category. The team will be led by two-time World Youth Championship competitor and 2011 Canadian Youth Trials winner Georcy-Stéphanie Thiffeault-Picard (Montréal, QC).  She will be joined by first-time World Youth Championship competitors Kirsten Chuli (Mississauga, ON) and Molly Solc (Joyceville, ON). 

Canada will also have a combination of young veteran and first-time international athletes competing in the other female and male Cadet and Junior age brackets (both the Recurve and Compound bow categories). To be eligible to compete in the Cadet age bracket, an athlete must be 17 years or younger on December 31st of the current year. For an athlete to compete as a Junior they must be 20 years or younger on December 31st of the current year.

The Championships take place every two years.  Canadian athletes will compete in the individual and team events (in those categories noted below having the full 3 athletes comprising a team).

Canadian Team Leader/Head Coach, Jeff Gunter expressed optimism surrounding the Team’s upcoming performances at the Championships. "I am very pleased with the overall Team that has been selected.  With the archers on this Team, we have a good opportunity to make a good showing in Legnica.  There are a number of strong shooters who could make a strong statement for Canadian archery on the World stage and I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to the Championships.”

4.       2011 3D World Championship 

Samantha Wright of the Quesnel River Archers (Quesnel, BC) will lead a small but strong team of 3D archers to the 2011 World Championship in Donnersbach-Planneralm, Austria, August 31st – September 3rd. Samantha is returning for a second time to the 3D World Championship.  At the 2009 3D World Championship in Latina, Italy, Wright found herself in a hotly contested division and up against a hometown favourite from Latina. In the shoot-off, Wright prevailed and stood on the podium, capturing the bronze medal.  Also returning to the World Championship is Peter Garrett of the South Nation Archery Club.

Jude Hooey, Archery Canada’s V-P of 3D Programs stated: “Our team size has increased over that of 2009 and so too has the potential for this year’s team. I’m optimistic for some fine performances from our athletes.”

5.       World Record Ratified for Canadian Athlete Chris Perkins

 

Canadian athlete Chris Perkins set a World Junior record at the recent World Senior Championship in Torino, Italy. The World record claim has since been ratified by World Archery.  Chris set an individual World record in the Junior Men’s Compound in an elimination round with a  score of 149 out of 150. The previous World record was 148.
