1. Passing of Alain Gravel
It is with a heavy heart that Archery Canada announces the recent passing of Alain Gravel.
Alain died suddenly at his home October 10, 2011, at the age of 63 years. The funeral took place Saturday, October 15, 2011 at St-Alphonse de La Baie church in La Baie, Quebec.
At the 2011 Canadian Outdoor Championship awards banquet held this past August in Delisle, SK, Alain was awarded the prestigious D.M. Lovo Award for lifetime contribution to archery. Alain was unable to be on-hand to accept the award in August, due to a family commitment. Without question, Alain was a most-deserving recipient of the Award.
Alain epitomized volunteerism. Furthermore, Alain consistently displayed a keen and genuine passion and love for archery. Alain’s contribution to Archery Canada and the Canadian archery community at large was far reaching and covered a wide spectrum of volunteer activities at all levels. At the national level for example, Alain served as: President and Vice-President of Finance and High Performance; Team Leader and Coach for a number of national teams; Technical Delegate and Director of Shooting at Team Trials and National Championships; and translator of numerous Archery Canada technical materials and issues of Archery Canada News. In addition to his many roles at the national level, Alain served in an array of capacities with the Quebec Archery Federation and with his community archery club – Les Archers du Fjord (formerly Les Archers de La Baie for which he was a co-founder).
Alain’s contribution to Archery Canada and to the Canadian archery family is second to none. Alain quietly and deservedly earned the respect of athletes, coaches, officials, parents and volunteer/staff administrators from across Canada. There is no doubt that the body of work that Alain undertook and contributed to Archery Canada and to the Canadian archery community was extraordinary. Our dear friend Alain will be greatly missed.
Alain is survived by his wife Diane Gravel Mercier, his mother, Mariette Gagnon, her sisters: France Gravel (Benedict Turner) and their children: Luke and Julie (his goddaughter), Sylvie (Jean-Pierre Simard) and their children: Martin and Stephanie (his goddaughter), Lynda (his goddaughter) (Cauchon Serge), her aunt Miss Georgette Mercier, his cousin and goddaughter: Sonia Meyers. Alain also leaves to mourn many cousins, relatives and close friends from his local archery, bowhunting and kayaking activities.
With the endorsement of Alain’s wife Diane, Archery Canada is accepting in Alain’s name, donations to the Canadian Archery Foundation. Donations may be made by contacting the Archery Canada national office. Tax receipts will be issued upon request.

2. 2011 Pan American Games: Results
2008 Canadian Olympian, Crispin Duenas (Toronto, ON) reached the podium capturing the silver medal for Canada in men’s recurve archery at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. The Games featured a number of the World’s best male and female archers. A total of 64 athletes (32 men and 32 women) competed in the recurve bow category, in both individual and team competitions.
In the gold medal match Duenas faced off against 2011 World Champion, Brady Ellison of the USA. The match was a see-saw battle with Ellison leading after the 3rd set. Duenas shot a perfect score of 10 with all three of his arrows in the 4th set to win it and force a 5th and deciding set. In the fifth set, Ellison shot first scoring a perfect 10 with his first arrow. Duenas then countered with a perfect 10 of his own. On the second arrow, the American shot another 10 while Duenas shot a 9. On his third and final arrow, Ellison shot a 9, opening the door for Duenas to tie the match if he shot a 10, and to force a tie-breaker for the gold. With his final arrow Duenas scored a 9, losing the final set 29 to 28 and consequently narrowly losing the match.
“I’m really pleased with the silver and to have fought to the last arrow to decide the gold against the current World champion”, said Duenas. My results here are a real confidence booster leading into London 2012. The time and effort I’ve put in over the past 4 years with my coach, Joan McDonald, and also more recently with my sport psychologist, is really starting to pay some dividends.”
The men’s team comprised of Duenas and 2008 Olympian, Jay Lyon (Winnipeg, MB) and international newcomer Patrick Rivest-Bunster (Montreal, QC), advanced to the bronze medal match in team competition. The Canadians narrowly lost to Cuba. Both Lyon and Duenas were on the men’s team that won a silver medal at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In Women’s team competition, the Canadians were ousted by Cuba in the ¼ final round. The Canadian Team was comprised of 2010 Commonwealth Games team bronze medallists Marie-Pier Beaudet (Lévis, QC) and Kateri Vrakking (Etobicoke, ON) and rookie international competitor, Vanessa Lee. Beaudet and Vrakking also were members of the women’s silver medal winning team at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro.
“The Pan Am Games have provided a great competitive opportunity for our archers. I’m confident we can build on this experience and success as we head into the Olympic year,” stated Joan McDonald, 2012 Olympic Head Coach.
The Pan Am Archery Team is comprised of:
Women’s Team

3. 2011 Parapan American Games Team
The para-archers representing Canada at the 2011 Parapan American Games, depart shortly for the Games. The Parapan American Games take place in Guadalajara, Mexico, November 12th to 20th.
The Canadian Team will be led by 2008 Paralympian, Kevin Evans (Jaffray, BC). Evans is
a two-time World Champion, having struck gold in the Men’s Open Compound Bow category at
the 2007 and 2009 Para-Archery World Championships. In late May of this year, Evans was
named World Archery’s Athlete of the Week because of his early season success at the
international level. In addition to his World Champion titles, Evans is the holder of two world
records in his category.
Evans will be joined by fellow Canadian archers Bob Hudson (Leoville, SK) and Lyne
Tremblay (Magog, QC). Hudson has had a strong 2011 season, following a season-ending injury
in 2010. At the Stoke Open international para-archery tournament held this mid-September in Stoke Mandeville, England, Hudson had a season’s best score and placement (4th place) and thereby secured a Paralympic Games quota spot for Canada in the Men’s Open Compound category. Tremblay, a 2008 Paralympian, is looking to be in the medal hunt in the Women’s Recurve Bow ARW2 category and in the process, secure a quota spot for the 2012 Paralympic Games.

14. Update from CCES: Meat Contamination Potential While Abroad
Clenbuterol is a potent drug that has the potential to be abused by athletes to enhance performance by increasing lean muscle mass and reducing body fat. Clenbuterol is on the 2011 WADA Prohibited List and is classified under the S1 category of Other Anabolic Agents as it promotes muscle growth. Clenbuterol is not legally distributed in Canada and is not approved by Health Canada to treat any medical condition.
CCES urges athletes to use the utmost care and caution if eating meat while travelling abroad and to be aware of the potential for contamination. When possible:
•Choose foods from a reputable source.
•Avoid eating liver or liver-derived products while abroad.
•Avoid eating unusual or exotic meat products.
•Consult with team support personnel who have specialized training in travel nutrition and meal logistics to help stay healthy and perform optimally.
There have been reports in the media of clenbuterol use to promote growth in livestock, including cattle, lamb, poultry and swine. Such use is illegal in Canada, the U.S. and Europe and appropriate food monitoring programs are in place to ensure the safety of the food supply in these countries.
In light of the recent media reports and current research regarding the increased potential for the presence of clenbuterol in meat, particularly in China and Mexico, CCES wants to help athletes and athlete support personnel understand the potential risks.
“There is heightened concern about the serious anti-doping and health issues posed by the ingestion of clenbuterol-contaminated meat,” stated Professor Christiane Ayotte, Director of the INRS Doping Control Laboratory in Montreal. “Athletes should be made aware of the risk and act prudently to minimize their risk.”
The ingestion of clenbuterol even in low dose will have effects on the body. As a stimulant, it will increase heart rate, temperature, sweating and blood pressure. Other detrimental side-effects can be experienced at higher dosages and include headaches, tremors, cramps, nervousness, anxiety, insomnia, nausea, palpitations. These effects will be reduced as clenbuterol clears the system.
Athletes should be reminded that clenbuterol is not a threshold substance on the WADA Prohibited List, thus even a trace amount found to be present in an athlete’s sample collected for the purposes of doping control could result in an adverse analytical finding and potentially lead to a violation and the imposition of a sanction. However, each case is different with many factors to consider and in every case the athlete is allowed to explain how the prohibited substance entered the body.
CCES will continue to evaluate this issue and keep you aware of new developments as they arise. WADA has asked the Chinese and Mexican governments to investigate this matter in order to assist anti-doping organizations in assessing any additional precautionary measures.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact CCES Toll-free in North America: 1-800-672-7775 or at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

15. AthletesCAN Launches “I Tested Positive?” Resources
Recognizing that athletes are subject to ongoing anti-doping regulations and testing, the “I Tested Positive?” resources were adopted by AthletesCAN to provide a straight-forward and independent guide to assist athletes should they be committed of an anti-doping rule violation according to the Canadian Anti-Doping Program (CADP).
This is an important resource for all athletes. The focus of this guide is to prepare athletes for an anti-doping hearing. Throughout the guide, links are provided to relevant portions of the CADP and to other resources that may be of assistance. The contents of the guide are presented in roughly the order that events will actually occur and each part of the guide deals with a separate topic or issue.

2. 2011 Pan American Games: Results
