1. Gold for Marie-Pier Beaudet at Olympic Qualifying Event

2008 Canadian Olympian, Marie-Pier Beaudet of Lévis, Quebec won the Continental Qualification Tournament for the Americas held on April 22nd in Medellin, Colombia. The win assures Canada a quota spot in the women's individual archery competition at the 2012 London Olympics.
Only three Olympic quota spots (one per country) were available in the individual event category at the Continental Qualification Tournament for the Americas. By virtue of Marie-Pier Beaudet's gold medal performance, Canada was guaranteed one of the three quota spots in the individual category. Mexico and Colombia won the two remaining Olympic quota spots. A total of 64 female archers will qualify for the London Olympics.
In the ranking round, Beaudet shot a score of 1340, setting a Canadian record in the process and finished 2nd in the ranking round. Fellow Canadian Vanessa Lee (Toronto, ON) set a personal best score of 1288 and placed 7th in the ranking round. Canada's Kateri Vrakking (Etobicoke, ON) shot a score of 1244 and finished 13th in the ranking round. As a result all three archers advanced to the elimination round. Kristen Niles (Moncton, NB) was unable to finish her round due to illness and therefore did not advance past the ranking round.
Early in the elimination round, Vrakking was up against world class archer Ana Maria Rendon of Colombia. Vrakking shot well taking the match to a 5 - 5 tie and a single arrow tie break. However, Rendon won the tie break and advanced to the quarterfinals. Meanwhile Beaudet and Lee met in the quarterfinals with Beaudet winning and moving onto the semi-finals. In her semi-final match, Beaudet was up against international veteran Aida Roman of Mexico. Beaudet prevailed in this tight match and advanced to the gold medal match against Rendon of Colombia.
Buoyed by the support of the 'hometown' Colombian crowd, Rendon took an early 3 – 1 lead in the gold medal match. Beaudet, who is recognized as a tough competitor in matchplay, re-grouped and won the gold medal match 7 – 3. As a consequence she secured an Olympic quota spot for Canada in the individual category. "Marie-Pier shot like there was a homing device in her arrows", said Head Olympic Coach, Joan McDonald. "An outstanding performance."
"I was really happy to get the Olympic spot for Canada and proud of my performance", said Beaudet. "It was a stressful day but everything went really, really well."
Canada has now secured one quota spot in both the women's and men's individual category at the London Olympics. At the 2011 World Archery Championship, Jason Lyon (Winnipeg, MB) secured Canada an Olympic quota spot based on his outstanding 5th place finish. The Canadian Selection Trials for the one female and one male individual event quota spots will take place May 26th - 28th at Pierre Bédard Park in Montreal.
Archery also has a male and female team event (3 archers) in the Olympic Games. Male and female Canadian archers will compete at the World Cup of Archery in Ogden, Utah this June 18th – 24th in hopes of securing a quota spot in both the men's and women's team event category.
Listed below are the athletes and staff comprising the Canadian contingent at the Continental Qualification Tournament for the Americas:
• Marie-Pier BEAUDET - Lévis, QC
