1.       Silver for Canada at 3rd 2012 World Cup of Archery

Led by 2011 World Outdoor Champion Chris Perkins (Athens, ON), Canada brought home the silver medal in the men’s compound bow team event at this season’s 3rd World Cup of Archery event. The World Cup wrapped-up Sunday in Ogden, Utah, USA.

Perkins and his teammates Simon Rousseau (La Prairie, QC) and Andrew Fagan (Ajax, ON), faced their arch rivals from the USA in the gold medal match. Canada and the USA have met three times before in gold medal matches at World Cup events.  The most recent was last year’s Ogden World Cup. The USA had won all three previous gold medal matches. Consequently, the Canadians were highly motivated to end their rival’s lock on the gold medal. With the exception of a slight error in the second end by Canada, the Canadians and Americans were in a tight battle for the lead. In the end, the Americans prevailed and kept alive their winning streak over Canada.

In the quarter-finals of the women’s compound bow team event, Canada’s bronze medal

winning team from the 2011 Odgen World Cup, faced the favoured Russians. The Canadian

team comprised of Camille Bouffard-Demers (Bécancour, QC), Dawn Groszko (Calgary, AB)

and Charlene Parlee (Sussex Corners, NB), put-up a strong fight losing by just two points.

Russia went on to win the team gold medal.

In the men’s individual compound bow category, Canada had a strong tournament with two top-eight finishes. Chris Perkins reached the medal round where he competed against Pierre-Julien Deloche of France for the bronze medal. Perkins is currently ranked 12th in the world while Deloche is ranked 6th.  The archers had never competed against one another so there was no clear favourite going into the match. The match proved to be exciting with the lead changing hands several times. Deloche prevailed and captured the bronze.  Earlier in the quarter-final round, Andrew Fagan went-up against Deloche of France. Fagan gave Deloche a tough match but in the end was narrowly beaten, 149 to 147 points. As a result, Fagan finished a very respectable and personal best 6th place.

In the women’s individual recurve bow category, Marie-Pier Beaudet (Lévis, QC), had a strong tournament, finishing 6th and bringing home another top 8 finish for Canada. In the quarter-final round, Beaudet faced Kristina Timofeeva of Russia. A see-saw battle ensued with Timofeeva eventually winning in a tie-breaker. The Russian went on to win the gold medal. Beaudet, a two-time Olympian (2004 and 2008), was recently nominated to the COC by Archery Canada for the one spot earned by Canada in the women’s individual archery category at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

2.       Canadian Archers Nominated for London 2012 Paralympic Games

A strong team of five archers has been nominated by Archery Canada to the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) for entry into the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

The Canadian contingent will be led by 2008 Paralympian and 2011 Parapan American Games gold medallist, Kevin Evans (Jaffray, BC). Evans is also a two-time defending world champion, having struck gold in 2007 and 2009 in the Men’s Open Compound Bow category.

“I’m really pleased and excited about returning to the Paralympic Games,” said Evans. “Last season was a bit rough with some untimely injuries, but things are definitely looking up this season and for the Paralympics.”

Joining Evans will be first-time Paralympian Bob Hudson (Leoville, SK). Hudson captured the silver medal in his category at the 2011 Parapan American Games. Both Hudson and Evans will compete in the men’s Compound Bow, Open category.

Lyne Tremblay (Magog, QC), a 2008 Paralympian, will compete in her second Paralympic Games. Tremblay will compete in the women’s Recurve Bow, ARW2 category.

Karen Van Nest (Wiarton, ON) will be competing in her fourth Paralympic Games. She competed in the 2000 Sydney, 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games in pistol shooting. The London 2012 Paralympic Games will mark the first time she competes as an archery athlete. Van Nest will compete in the women’s Compound Bow, Open category.

Rounding-out the strong Canadian contingent is international veteran Norbert Murphy (Vaudreuil-Dorion, QC). Murphy will be competing in his third Paralympic Games. He competed at the 2000 Sydney and 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games. Murphy captured the bronze medal at the 2009 World Para-Archery Championship and finished fifth at the 2011 World Para-Archery Championship (in the men’s Compound Bow, ARW1 category).

The five archers nominated to the Canadian Paralympic Team for London is an increase from the three who competed at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games four years ago.

“I am really happy to see the fantastic growth in Paralympic archery with a record number of athletes being nominated to the London 2012 team with real chances of medals,” said Gaétan Tardif, Chef de mission for Team Canada.

Vladimir Kopecky (Kimberley, BC) is Archery’s Team Leader for the Games.

“I believe we have a very strong team and that we have a real chance to be on the podium,” Kopecky said. “We are going to the Games to do Canada proud.”

12.      Call for Volunteer: Coordinator of Scorecard Revisions

Archery Canada is seeking a volunteer to coordinate the many different scorecards used in our tournaments. At the present time, the Chair of the Rules Committee, V-P Events and Services and the Webmaster do what they can to keep the scorecards up-to-date and available on the website. However, there is a need to have one volunteer coordinate the work in order to ensure all scorecards are current, correct, bilingual, numbered and catalogued. Interested candidates  need not be bilingual, however it is considered an asset. If interested, please contact the Archery Canada national office at < This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
