2010 Archery Canada Annual Awards Recipients

 

D.M. Lovo Lifetime Award Winner – ALAIN GRAVEL

 

Alain Gravel epitomizes volunteerism. Furthermore, Alain consistently displays a keen and genuine passion and love for archery. Alain’s contribution to Archery Canada and the Canadian archery community at large is far reaching and covers a wide spectrum of volunteer activities at all levels. At the national level for example, Alain has served as: President and Vice-President of High Performance; Team Leader and Coach for a number of national teams; Chair and Director of Shooting at national championships; and translator of numerous Archery Canada technical materials and communications. In addition to his numerous roles at the national level, Alain has served in an array of capacities with the Quebec Archery Federation and with his community archery club.  

Alain’s contribution to Archery Canada and to the Canadian archery family is second to none. Alain has quietly and deservedly earned the respect of athletes, coaches, officials, parents and volunteer/staff administrators from across Canada. There is no doubt that the body of work that Alain has undertaken and contributed to Archery Canada and the Canadian archery community is extraordinary.  Consequently, Alain is a most-deserving recipient of the D. M. Lovo Award for lifetime contribution to archery.

Dorothy Lidstone Female Athlete of the Year Award Winner – ASHLEY WALLACE

 

Ashley Wallace of Medicine Hat, Alberta, marched onto the 2010 international scene with an impressive series of podium finishes.

Ashley opened the 2010 season with a double gold medal performance at the World Cup in Porec, Croatia. Ashley struck gold in the individual Women’s Compound category and teamed-up with Dietmar Trillus to win gold in the Compound Mixed Team category. She then followed this up   with a podium finish at the World Cup in Antalya, Turkey, where she captured bronze in the individual Women’s Compound category.  At the 3rd World Cup of the 2010 season, (Ogden, Utah) Ashley teamed-up with Doris Jones and Camille Bouffard-Demers to bring home the silver in the Women’s Compound Team event.  The World Cup season culminated with an individual silver medal performance at the World Cup Final in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The 2010 season came to a close on a high note for Ashley where at the  Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, she stood  on the podium yet again. In the Women’s Compound Bow Team event Ashley and teammates Doris Jones and Camille Bouffard-Demers, finished second.

Frank Jones Male Athlete of the Year Award Winner – CRISPIN DUENAS

Crispin Duenas had a memorable 2010 season on the international stage. His success began at the always competitive World Cup in Ogden, Utah. Here Crispin finished in 4th place behind three Koreans in the individual Men’s Recurve category, narrowly losing the bronze medal match to the 2009 World Champion. 

In October, Crispin competed at the Commonwealth Games where he finished 9th. He then followed this up with a strong season ending performance at the Pan-American Archery Championship where twice he stood on the podium. In the Men’s Recurve Team event, Crispin and teammates Hugh MacDonald and Philippe Arsenault took the silver medal, narrowly losing to the USA in the gold medal match. The team’s 2nd place finish secured quota spots for a full men’s team for the 2011 Pan-American Games. Crispin then ended the Pan-American Archery Championship by bringing home the individual bronze medal, beating the 4th place finisher from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

In addition to Crispin’s success in reaching the podium in 2010, he established a new Canadian Senior Recurve record in a FITA 1440 round with a score of 356 at 30 metres.

Female Junior Athlete of the Year Award Winner – CAMILLE BOUFFARD-DEMERS

Although a junior age athlete, Camille Bouffard-Demers of Bécancour, Quebec, had a stand-out 2010 season competing at the senior international level.

The 3rd World Cup in Ogden, Utah, saw Camille stand on the podium along with teammates Doris Jones and Ashley Wallace where they captured the silver in the Women’s Compound Team event. Camille then followed this up with a strong individual performance at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India. The momentum generated by her individual performance served her well in the Team event at the Commonwealth Games. Camille, Doris Jones and Ashley Wallace teamed-up again and brought home the silver for Canada. This capped-off a most successful 2010 season for Camille.

Tom Mack Junior Male Athlete of the Year Award Winner – CHRISTOPHER PERKINS

As in 2009, 2010 proved to be successful season for Christopher (Chris) Perkins of Athens, Ontario and member of the South Nation Archery Club. 

Chris successfully defended his Junior Canadian title in the Compound category. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games Selection Trials, Chris finished a strong 4th behind senior-age veterans and therefore was named as the alternate to the Commonwealth Games Team in the compound category.

Chris’ success on the field of play not only saw him stand on the podium at the Ontario and Canadian Championships but also saw him set a number of records including a World Junior record.  At the 2010 Gold Cup in Bloomfield, New Jersey, USA, Chris’ score of 702 in the FITA 70 metre round established a new World record in the Junior Male Compound category. In addition to the World record, Chris set Canadian Junior Compound records in the following: i) an indoor FITA 1 round with a score of 590; and ii) a FITA 70 metre round with a score of 704.

Chris’ steady improvement and success over the past two seasons, bodes well for future success at the international level.

            Christopher was nominated by the Archery Canada High Performance Committee.

 

Greg Durward Volunteer of the Year Award Winner – RICHARD TOWLER

In 2010 Richard Towler, a long-time coach and volunteer, broke onto the national and international scene serving as Team Leader for several of Archery Canada’s 2010 National Teams. Richard first served as Team Leader for the World Cup in Ogden, followed by the Commonwealth Games and lastly the Pan-American Archery Championship. In his role as Team Leader, Richard’s organizational skills and attention to detail proved invaluable for the planning and preparation of the National Teams to compete at each of these major international tournaments.

Much of Richard’s volunteer efforts were focused on the 2010 Commonwealth Games. In the months and days leading-up to the Games and throughout the course of the Games, Richard was ‘the face’ of Archery Canada. Richard oversaw the administration and coordination of numerous key areas; ensured that the flow of information to Team members was timely and informative; and kept the lines of communication open and transparent with Commonwealth Games Canada and Archery Canada staff and High Performance Committee volunteers.    

Richard consistently represented Archery Canada in a most professional manner and undertook his volunteer duties with enthusiasm and commitment. Richard’s ‘behind the scenes’ work proved to be an important ingredient to the success of the National Teams.

Sylvio Beauregard Judge of the Year Award Winner – RANDALL JONES

Randall Jones, of the Archers of Caledon (Caledon, Ontario) has steadily risen through the judging ranks and has proven to be a committed, knowledgeable and skilled official.

Throughout the 2010 season, Randall officiated at numerous Canadian and international tournaments. Randall’s skill, expertise and commitment to officiating was acknowledged and rewarded when in late 2010 World Archery’s (FITA’s) Judge Committee approved the upgrading of Randall from International Judge Candidate to International Judge status. Since his appointment, Randall has been called on to serve as a judge at a number of 2011 international tournaments (World Archery’s Senior World and Para-Archery Championships and the Pan-American Games). This marks what will undoubtedly prove to be a long and successful career as an International Judge.

Randall’s commitment to officiating at club and provincial and national championships remains as strong as ever and so too does his passion and commitment to furthering the development of judging in Canada

Hank Wiseman Coach of the Year Award Winner – JOAN MacDONALD

Among her many 2010 accomplishments and contributions to Archery Canada and the Canadian archery community was Joan’s serving as Canada’s Head Coach at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the Pan-American Archery Championship. These added to a long list of Head Coach positions held by Joan throughout her lengthy and illustrious coaching career.  In addition, Joan is the personal coach to a number of athletes that competed at major 2010 international tournaments. Of particular note are high performance athletes Crispin Duenas and Alana MacDougall, both of whom are coached by Joan. Crispin stood on the podium twice at the 2010 Pan-American Archery Championship; finished 9th at the Commonwealth Games; and finished 4th at the World Cup in Ogden, Utah.  Alana and her teammates captured the bronze medal in the Recurve Team event at the Commonwealth Games and then followed this up with a 4th  place in the team event at the Pan-American Archery Championship.

In addition to her many hours as a personal coach and National Team Head Coach, Joan is very involved in providing archery instruction and training to high school students in the Toronto area. As well, Joan played the lead role in founding the Ontario High School Archery Championship and continues to be the lead volunteer on the growth and development and delivery of this annual Championship.

Throughout 2010 Joan willingly volunteered her expertise, experience and time to Archery Canada as the Senior Program Coordinator.  In this volunteer capacity, Joan played the lead role in all aspects of the Senior Team Program, including: development of Senior National Team selection criteria and Team selection; carding criteria and nomination; ranking criteria and ranking list management; administration of Senior National Team activities, events and programs; and administrative and technical support to the Archery Canada Executive Director. 

Joan was nominated by the Archery Canada High Performance Committee.
