Arrow Wrap/Size Clarification
Arrow size and use of arrow wraps
Arrow wraps are a useful means of marking, identifying and just plain dressing-up arrows.
However, recent events demonstrated a problem with the use of arrow wraps on large-diameter target arrows that must be no more than 9.3mm in diameter.
Although arrows usually are not imbedded to the depth of the wrap, this does occur. When the arrow is close to a target line, this presents a conundrum that has prompted FITA to issue an Interpretation to ensure that the rules for arrow diameter are fully understood.
The full Interpretation is available on the FITA website
FITA conducted an investigation of the issue, and found that a single layer of commercially available arrow wraps would preclude the use of only two arrow sizes/diameters (in the maximum allowable range of a 23 size shaft) that would otherwise be legal if no arrow wrap was applied. Those two arrow sizes are 2315 and 2312.
BE ADVISED…
If you are shooting target Compound or Recurve and using arrows size 23##, and are using arrow wraps, be sure to check the diameter of your arrows on the wrap and not just the aluminum shaft. If the diameter exceeds 9.3 mm, you will not be permitted to use them in competition.
About the wrap and the size of arrows :l Without any wrap : l Only 2317 is over 9.3 mm. l Why is the 2317 arrow size not legal for FITA competition: (legal=9.3 mm=0.3661 inch maximum) l 2317 means outside diameter 23/64 inch =0.3594 with a 0.017 wall thicknes. l But in fact l 2312 =outside diameter 0.3634 inch l 2314 =outside diameter 0.3568 inch l 2315 =outside diameter 0.3649 inch l 2317 =outside diameter 0.3690 inch (more than 0.3661 inch)
l With a wrap l The interpretation of Fita says that the maximum size of the arrows must include the wrap l A single layer, commercially available arows wrap would preclude the use of only two arrows size/diameters in the maximum allowable range of a 23 size shaft. The arrows sizes are 2315 and 2312. These arrows would otherwise be legal if no arrow wrap was applied.
